FTF-Firearms Instructor School

 

General Description
This two-week school is a basic firearms program for pistol and Type 4 Long Gun (shotgun) for law enforcement and correctional officers. It meets all minimum standards established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions. Please review all information carefully before requesting enrollment.


MANDATORY PREREQUISITES
Applicants not adhering to the listed requirements will be denied the seat until prerequisites are met.


QUALIFICATIONS:
- All students requesting enrollment are required to have scored a minimum of 85% on the last two years of day-fire handgun qualifications (this applies to duty weapon only, not secondary). These scores will be verified by the MPCTC Registrar and Rangemaster before confirming enrollment. Students not meeting this requirement will be automatically denied a seat in the course.

- Per COMAR, applicants for Firearms Instructor need two or more years employment within the last 5 years as a law enforcement or correctional officer, during which employment the individual was authorized to use or carry a firearm for a minimum of 2 years.

- Students should review COMAR 12.04.06.12 “Certification – Firearms Provisional Instructor, Line Instructor and Firearms Instructor” prior to attending the course. This regulation establishes minimum requirements for classroom instruction and firearms training and qualification course of fire for the certification of instructor classifications. The minimum passing score Commission-approved instructor qualification course of fire for handgun and Type 4 Long Gun is 90%.


ROSTER LIMITATIONS:
- This course is limited to 2 students per agency. Training coordinators can contact [email protected] to add additional students to the wait list. This restriction will be lifted if seats remain available 2 months prior to each program's start date.

- Agencies are able to hold ONE TBD seat per YEAR as of 2024. Agencies holding a seat with a yet to-be-determined student will need to enter student details at least 2 months prior to the course start date. If a student name is not received by this time, the hold will be automatically removed from the roster.

- All registrations have a closing date of 1 month (30 days) prior to the course starting date. Any cancellations after the closing date may result in the forfeiture of the registration fee.


MATERIALS:
Students are required to bring:
- Duty weapon with 3 issued magazines.
- Leather gear (duty belt, holster, sturdy pants belt, belt keeper’s etc.)
- 1,200 rounds of ammunition for pistol(must all be the same)
- 15 rounds of 12 gauge – rifled slug ammunition for shotgun
- 50 rounds of 12 gauge – 00 buck (9 pellet) ammunition for shotgun.
- Preferred shotgun ammo is Federal LE 127 for both 00 Buck and Slug
- ALL ammunition must be American made and from a reputable manufacturer. If the ammunition is re-manufactured, the casings must be brass or nickel – SAAMI specs (no aluminum).
- Body armor if the student’s Department requires the wearing while on range.
- Flashlight – Police style
- Note taking materials
- Proper range attire (see below)
- Baseball style cap

Uniform of the day or dress code: Students are required to present themselves in a professional manner at all times, to include attire. NO JEANS OR GRAPHIC T-SHIRTS. Students are to display identification in form of Agency badge, Agency identification card or Agency logo polo shirt.

Proper range attire should include loose fitting clothing for comfort and button collar shirt for protection from shell casings. BDU trousers are excellent because of the extra pockets. Boots or good quality athletic shoes are to be worn along with a baseball style cap to help keep brace from your face/eyes.


Additional Information:

- All applicants for the MPCTC Firearms Instructor Training Program must receive approval from their home agency in order to register for this training (online registration implies approval). Students wishing to attend the course outside of authorization from their agency will not be permitted. - Applicants from any non-client law enforcement agencies will be admitted to the class only if there are vacant seats remaining within 1 week of the first day of training. This course is restricted to law enforcement only and not open to civilians. Interested persons can email a signed registration form with payment method indicated to [email protected] to be added to the wait list. Client Agencies are Maryland certified agencies under the regulated authority of the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commissions (MPCTC). MD Police & Correctional Training Commissions requires credit card information in order to process non-client enrollments (Visa or MasterCard).
