This course is required for initial certification of new DARE Instructors. Topics include: DARE curricula, working effectively in schools, comprehensive teaching strategies and methodologies, youth development and behavior management.
Some out of class preparation assignments will be required frequently during the two-week course. Certification granted by DARE America and MPCTC upon successful completing of mandated objectives. Candidates are required to have a minimum of two years law enforcement experience, unless waived by DARE America.
There is required pre-course work to be completed prior to the start of training. Candidates will receive information closer to the start date, but will have ample time to complete their assignments.
Note: Client-agencies are defined as Maryland certified agencies under the regulated authority of the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commissions (MPCTC). Interested persons from non-client (out-of-state) agencies can email a signed registration form which will be reviewed by the Maryland DARE Coordinator to [email protected]. All forms must have an approving signature in order to register the student. This can be an agency head, supervisor, or training coordinator – someone to authorize the student to take this course. Due to the fee associated with this program, MD Police & Correctional Training Commissions requires credit card information in order to process non-client enrollments (Visa or MasterCard).

Class Description
This 80+ hour training is required by both D.A.R.E. America and MPCTC for certification of all new DARE Instructors, and provides successful graduates with authorization to deliver copyrighted DARE curricula for elementary and middle school programs, parent and community programs, as well as several enhancement lessons on such topics as Bullying, Gangs and Internet Safety. The focus of the training is to provide instructors with the skills necessary for successful classroom instruction and student learning. The course also provides instructional blocks for School Resource Officers and school-based policing officers.
